Owl pellet dissection and making sense of it all.
Although our handling charge for packaging and shipping
is a flat $6.00, our prices on pellets are quite low, and
are based on extending to all teachers the price advantage
usually reserved for those who buy hundreds of pellets at
a time. We have held to this price schedule for over fifteen
years, and have good supplies of pellets.
The book Secrets of the Nest by Joan Dunning is one well worth reading. Among the many birds, the nesting habits of which she discusses, is the Barn Owl. She cites one study of 703 pellets of the Barn Owl which yielded 16 bats, 3 rats, 939 mice, 1,579 shrews, 1 mole, 19 English sparrows and 3 other birds. A second study of 200 pellets produced 454 skulls including those of 225 meadow mice, 2 pine mice, 179 house mice, 20 rats, 6 jumping meadow mice, 20 shrews, 1 star-nosed mole and 1 vesper sparrow. The conclusion might rightly be drawn that any given pellet may contain the bones, fur and feathers of more than one animal.
